Someone wrote about being annoyed at people who use their brakes in traffic ( due to bright red lights) rather than hand brake. It's never bothered me before (though is not something I do now) but now it annoys me badly, I'm so upset to have become so petty!!

If you drive automatic it's almost unheard of to use the hand brake in my experience, but in manual cars (I'm in the UK) they are used on a regular basis when stopped for more than a second or two.

Yes, but then I make myself think "it never bothered me before so there's really nothing wrong with it".

in what country is it more reasonable to hand brake than to use the pedal, thus lighting one's brake lights to warn those behind? sorry, i've never heard of that, and i'm not being mean, but that sounds dangerous to my way of thinking!

I've an automatic and rarely use the handbrake in traffic.
