I've done this a lot. Sometimes I have been wrong and sometimes I've been right. Just wave. The head nod can be seen as you think your better than that person and you don't have to give the same type of response because they are beneath you. I've met a lot of interesting people that way!

Wave back, anyway, at the risk of being rude. Many times, I'll wave back to people I don't even know, just because it's a goofy thing to do . . .

I would first look around to see if anyone else is waving back. If the person is my friend, I would wave back at them and then point at myself and shrug my shoulders as if to say, "You talkin to me?"

Usually, I give them "The Nod."
Simply nod your head towards them, maybe even motioning for them to come closer to speak to them. If someone else goes to them, you don't look stupid, if they come to you, your nod was accurate! â¥
