I have a huge bump on the back of my heal about the size of an almond which prevents me from wearing any closed back shoes. Does anyone have any experience with this as my doctor seems to be at a lost.

I had that. It was a bony growth that I had surgically removed, as I couldn't wear shoes, either. Painful painful surgery, and six weeks on crutches.

It seems to be Achilles tendon insertion tendinitis. Sometimes it may develop when you wear too tight shoes or after repeated movements of your foot (e.g. in an athlete). You should however have an x-ray at that area to exclude any other pathology. Go consult an orthopaedic surgeon
