Are there any children involved? If so, child protective services will help her. If not, she can leave and relocate, she doesn't have to file for a divorce for years, she can just leave and get herself on her feet. She should post a add in the local newspaper stating that she is no longer responsible for any debts acquired by anyone other than herself, cut a copy out of the paper and keep it in a safe place. At office depot or any other office supply, you can purchase a divorce kit, around 20.00, then you fill out the papers and file them, a cheap divorce if no kids or property are involved. Have her use your, or your parents mailing address in case he is stalking her.If she fears him, she can put a restraining order against him. If she calls 911, the police will take her to a domestic abuse shelter, and they will help her get a fresh start in life. She can never tell anyone where this shelter is located, for the safety of everyone there.

Your sister needs to contact a Paralegal. A paralegal does all the attorneys work anyway. Lots of paralegals do their own work either from their homes to keep the cost down, or maybe in an office with others. They are about a fourth of what a lawyer is. Check into other counties around you too, that's legal. Some counties need money, so their divorces are cheaper. Call their city halls for info.

If she lives in the US, I would check in the phone book under "Legal Services" or "Legal Aid". They do their work for free or nearly free for people that can't afford an attorney otherwise.

She could also check with Social Services to see if they had any ideas. They might have a list of attorneys that do either pro bono work or would do it for almost nothing.

Depending on whether it's a messy divorce (a lot of assets, money in the bank, etc), and both sides agree without a lot of argument, it can be fairly cheap in most states.

Good luck!

Get your family together and see if everyone can pitch in and help her with this..she does not need, by any means, to return to an abusive relationship..Some of the abuse centers for women have lawyers that are willing to go pro bono and or refer you to someone that would charge a lot less than just by picking a lawyer out of the phone book.

if your sister is having allot of trouble money wise because of court cost....have her go to some legal aid. if there are children involved have her go to some women shelter...set pride aside and get the help she can get. tough call, tough choices... but there are always different avenue's to take, start calling around in the area that she lives, my best bet tho is the women shelter is where she get the best help and answers from. Best of luck to her!!!
