My project manager has recently asked everyone on our team to work 50 hours a week on average from now until July 6, is this a legal requirement?

yes they can, I have seen people "asked to leave" for not being able to work overtime. Now days, most job descriptions do say "must be able to work when needed" which is a pretty big blanket statement

Your other option is they can terminate your employment. If you are an independent contractor they can't dictate the hours you work, but they can find someone else who will work they hours they want. Most employers are at-will, they can terminate your employment without a reason. Others are just-cause, they need a reason to fire you. They could justify firing because you refused to work the required hours.

Yes. Take the money because the work not alway going to be where.
