In a simple algebra problem like this, the first step is to separate the variables (place "x" on one side, numbers on the other).

So,

8x+1=2x+9

becomes

8x-2x=9+1

6x=8

to solve for x, just divide off the 6.

x=8/6

x=4/3

x=1.25

ok if the eqation is all over 74 you first have to get the variables all the one side.

so subtract the 2x from the 8x on the other side and from itself
(what you to do one side you must do to the other)
your equation should now look like 6x+1=9
subtract 1 from both sides and get 6x=8 keep the equation as is and put it over 74
that should be the correct answer ... if not i apologize

X=8/6

8x+1=2x+9
8X=2X+8
(-2x on each side)
6x=8
x=8/6
