You can use either dryer sheets or fabric softener in the wash cycle. For use with babies, I'd consider it like anything else of a baby: try it and evaluate. Run a load with your choice and see if the baby has a reaction. If so, don't use that brand. You might want to try another brand to see if that is okay.
Personally, I find that the sheets give off too much softness and fragrance. I prefer using the liquid softener via the dispenser in my washing machine. That way I can use a little bit or a lot more depending on the type of laundry or who it's for. Just a few ideas to consider.

It all depends on how sensitive baby's skin is. Is baby physically sensitive like rashes or to the touch or both? Is baby fussy over seams and tags in garments or is everything OK? If baby is touch sensitive try 1-2 outfits with fabric softener liquid or sheets and see how they react. If baby has physically sensitive skin and reacts to other detergents try only liquid fabric softener, dryer sheets are very harsh on the skin.
My youngest (and toughest) did not need any special detergents. I have sensitive skin and use cheer free for all laundry. After I tried a few outfits on him with no trouble, we just used our "regular" detergent for all laundry.
But my daughter was diagnosed with eczema at 3. We no longer user any fabric softener and have started using the nubby dryer balls. They are not as good as softener, but MUCH better than nothing.
Take care.

The only thing you really want to avoid using fabric softener with is any flame retardent clothing that your baby wears....
After your baby is over 6months, you can start testing regular laundry soaps by washing an item or two and seeing if your baby's skin reacts.
Personally, I never used laundry soap for babies, I felt it a waste of money, I just used perfume/dye free stuff, which worked fine.

They say that fabric softners make the clothes less fire resistant. But I understand hard scratchy clothes are uncomfortable.. I'd suggest the dye free and scent free ones for baby.. good luck. I have used ALL dye free and Dreft on all the clothes that I have bought so far and my 5yr old has somewhat sensitve skin so it works for him also.

I used Arm and Hammer to wash my baby's clothes. The white bottle. It is dermatoligist tested and fragrance free. and MUCH cheaper than dreft. It worked well.
Aslo I used the Bounce Free dryer sheets. They make the clothes nice and soft while not irratating the baby's skin.

When my daughter turned about 6 months I started using Downy, not the full amount and dryer sheets with her laundry. She has very sensitive skin, we need to use certain soaps and lotions due to the rashes and dry spots she would get when she was born. The downy and dryer sheets have not caused any skin problems and or irritation for her.

Yes, you can use fabric softener. I asked my mom that same question when I had my baby. She said to use ONLY Downy, something about how it is the gentlest. I use the vanilla/lavender kind. I like it because her clothes smell great and the lavender is very calming. It's expensive but if you only use it for your baby's clothes it will last forever.

You shouldn't use dryer sheets they can lower the flame retardency of infant clothing. Fabric softener is ok though.
