The main aspect would be elasticity of the material. The new branch is more elastic than the old, hence the new branch bends while the old one breaks.

moisture adds flexibility compared to dry, more non flexible peices...

Consider what people do to weave a basket, or make a branch curve to become the outer C holding the back supports to make a chair out of complete branch pieces. They soak them in water to make them more flexible. Now, the question is, why does moisture make wood more flexible?

the older tree, was no longer as strong and youth full as it once was therefore no match for such conditions as the younger tree
