As well as all the great ideas here... we have some fun with the callers...
My son always says his Dad is stuck in the attic and his Mom is shaving her legs right now...
I just generally ask the caller what they are wearing... male or female, doesn't matter... slows them down a bit...
Sometimes we tell them it's not convenient right now so can I have their home number and I'll call them back... they have mine and disturbed me so give me yours and I'll disturb you.
Just have some creative fun with them. How old are their kids? What kind of car do they drive? How much money is in their chequing account? Do they know that while they're at work, their boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife is with the neighbour? How did they get their job, it sounds like a great place to meet people... and so on... just be silly, they'll strike you off the list.

Go to the website of TPS (Telephone Preference Service): www.tpsonline.org.uk and register your telephone number.
I was suffering from a lot of cold callers myself, but after registering with TPS this has considerably reduced.
Quote from the TPD website:
"The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations, including charities and voluntary organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive
Under Government legislation introduced on 1st May 1999 and replaced on 11th December 2003 by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.
You can either do this by contacting companies directly and asking them not to call you or you can register with a central register - the TPS."

Register with the TPS Telephone preferential Service
I'll try and get the number from the phone book for you.
Once you have done this companies are not allowed to cal you and must by law take you off their data base.
The only exception is marketing calls where they are not actually selling anything
The phone no. is 0845 07 007 07

Sign up for the "do not call list" at www.donotcall.gov. It may not be 100% but ours was way better!! Not-for-prophets and companies that you do business with can still call. It should wipe out 99% of cold calls.

I remember hearing this one, and it does work. Simply press any button/key on your phone, instead of speaking. It will make an annoying sound on the other end. Then just hang up.
