My fiance has asthma, but i've never seen her have an attack, so i didnt think it was that bad. but last night while in bed, she started having trouble breathing and afterwards, her lungs felt like someone was crushing them. ive never been around someone with asthma so i want to know what i can do to help alleviate her attacks.

it hurt to see her in pain, and since we're getting married soon, i want to be there for her.

also, we're very much in love and i want her to know that i'm not going to leave her b/c of her illness. (she's had b/fs break up with her since she had asthma). i told her last night, that i would never leave her, but i want to say the right thing that leaves her knowing that i'm marrying her and accept her for who she is, including her asthma. (does that make sense to you?) any words of wisdom?

please help! i care very much for this woman!

First , let me say that you sound like a very sweet man! I have asthma and it's not fun. The attacks can come one very fast and they can be really scary. My boyfriend does his best to calm me down and make sure that I'm doing ok. There's really not much you can do but comfort her during those attacks. Watch her closely though, if she seems to really be having trouble, you may have to take her to the emergency room. Get her inhaler for her if she needs it and and just listen to what she is telling you. She'll let you know if it gets to be too much. Most of us cope with it very well. Just let her know that you are concerned for her safety and that you want to know when she's having trouble breathing so you can help her out. I think you'll be a great husband. Good luck to you both!

I'm quite shocked that previous boyfriends would leave her because she's got asthma.

The main thing is making sure that she has inhalers at hand wherever she goes. Ask her to show you which one she uses and when and where she keeps them. She should have a asthma plan, for example 2 puffs brown twice and day and the blue one as needed (when harder to breath).

The most important thing that you can do when she has an asthma attack is to keep calm and help her to keep calm and use her inhaler. If she does not find that inhalers work enough then she needs to go to her doctor and ask about other things that can help.

If you are still worried after reading these answers, why don't you look into doing a course or buying a book about it.

Look up info on the Internet: for example http://www.asthma.org.uk/all_about_asthma/asthma_basics/index.html
