We'd prefer to get a civil union instead of marriage. Do any countries allow this? (That country would also have to recognize same sex civil unions.)

Unfortunately, from what I have read about the subject- a Hetero couple cannot get a civil union- the closest thing that i have found is common law marriages.

A civil union is aimed more towards a homosexual couple.

If you live together with a person for a determined amount of time, they are considered to be "married" to each other. Check out the links that i have given for further help on the subject and locations.
