I graduated with a degree in journalism, but you'd be surprised, many publications want someone who is first and foremost a strong learner with expertise in several areas: educaiton, economics, environment, crime and correction, etc. Best thing to do if you have no experience is to find a weekly newspaper in the community and ask if there is anything you can freelance. You wont receive much pay if any, but it is essential towards building up a portfolio. Take out a book on newswriting too or purchase one. The Associated Press has a few really good ones. Check those out online. Learn different formats: pyramid and features come to mind. Keep in mind you're writing for an audience. Know the audience you are writing for. Weeklies are less breaking news and more feature-like. Good luck. I'm trying to get back in the field.

Like the Nike slogan.... just do it.
The best way to become a writer is writing. The more you do it, the better you become (hopefully).
As to journalism, Indymedia is a good place to start.

They have sites all around the world. Go watch something interesting taking place near you, and write about it.
Then post it to Indymedia.
