I have a 2005 Impala. The speedometer has been flucuating for a couple of months now. This morning the temp gauge went all the way to hot. But the car was not hot. Could these be linked?

The good news is that this is a common problem.

Now, the reasons they do this is undeterminned. Some people have had luck with swapping the guage cluster out, others havent.
The first thing you should do is pull the diagnostic codes. This will tell you if the speed sensor is malfunctioning or if the thermostat is dead.
The speed sensor is a common failure, and that would explain the fluctuating speedo. it is on the transmission, the wires are yellow and purple.
But then again, a faulty body control module will cause flucuating guages, but is usually associated with erroneous lights.

2005 Impala Speedometer Recall

I own a shop, and you are in luck, I think? We ran into this problem with an Impala about a year ago. After hours of pulling our hair out, and taking the dash totally out of the car, we were surprised to find; the problem was with a spring loaded clip thing (that has teeth like holes in it) comes off the dash, and digs into the firewall to get the ground for the cluster of gages. It wasn't digging in good enough to keep a good ground supplied to the dash. What we did was; we took a piece of pretty heavy gauge wire, bolted it to the firewall, and to the dash. We then took the ground strap that runs from the engine to the firewall, cleaned it good, smeared grease on the connection, and made sure it was getting a good ground. This solved the problem.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

It can.....it can be in the wiring harness or more likely the problem is the cluster. If you call a speedometer shop in your area they can usually repair them fairly inexpensive.
