How cool can he be if it took him 12 years to "fall in love" with someone just to be totally wrong. His compass and antenna are off. They will continue to be wrong next time and take more than 12 years. You are wasting your time trying to "save" someone as your own conquest unless, of course, you have nothing to do for the next 12 years

Were they even together or was he just in love from afar?? If so, what he was feeling was obsession, not love. Love is euphoric anyway. True love is after the euphoric feelings wear off and real work begins. Both people working hard is true love. Of course he can love again. However, if his pattern is waiting 12 years to express himself, he may never find anyone. He needs to be honest with himself and those he likes/loves. If he's still hung up over this girl, he won't be able to commit to anyone until he gets over her because his heart won't be free. He really needs to move on.

he can fall in love with someone else, but only after he has accepted that things will never work out for him and the other girl. he has to accept the truth, for as long as he carries this torch for her, no other can get in his heart. he may need some therapy to get over this. so don't start a new relationship with someone who is still in love with another.

It depends. He probably still has feelings for the other girl, but he's also really hurt. Getting with another woman would actually help him get over the chick who broke his heart.
