Well, because it is illegal, and they are a big influence on the Middle school, High school and College athletes, who will also take them when they see it helps the Professional athletes perform better.

Personally, I think the media has made it a larger than life scandal that even has the president involved, which is amazing considering the problems we already have in this country.
