There are two types: Webkinz and Lil'kinz. Lil'kinz look very similar to Beanie Babies and Webkinz are the bigger version. Each one comes with a code that allows you to log onto the Webkinz site and play with your pet in a virtual reality setting. They start with a house that you can customize by buying items from the shop. You are given x number of dollars per kinz (more for the bigger ones) and then you earn more money by playing games, answering quizzes, getting a job, etc. You have a health meter, a happiness meter and a hunger meter and you must make sure your virtual pet stays healthy, happy and fed. You have to purchase food and vitamins at the shop as well. You can play interactively with other Kinz owners, make friends and send them gifts. From what I can see, you can only chat using stock phrases which makes it very kid friendly.

These Kinz are very popular. Stores where I live sell out within hours of getting a new shipment and actually take names on a waitlist for popular items.

Webkinz are basically a stuffed animal that you can virtually play on the computer by using the code it has on the tag when you buy them. You can buy them anywhere.
