do these places really exist?

Yes storage places exist all across America.
I have seen them getting more popular outside of the US in recent years.
As far as coming in handy someday they won't. Meaning the storage room bit that was funny because people do not do that. At least I have never seen it. It was funny because was ludicrous. I mean they are tiny rooms with no power no bathroom, sheet metal walls so either very hot or very cold. You have to be really really bad off for that to be an option again that's why it was funny. In reality you could stay at rest stops with bathrooms or even a park but storage room never. It is so pathetic its funny.

Yes we have them in America, it is just a little storage garage that you rent, you pay monthly. They are long, narrow connected storage "sheds". If you live in an apartment or somewhere small, and do not have enough storage space at home!

Television has caused me to believe they do actually exist! And moving vans? I;ve never seen a proffesional mover in real life! Has anybody else?

I would guess most countries have them in some form or another.
There is a chain in the UK called big yellow box(?) or something similar.
