I think it's a great thing. I do it all the time. During that time it gives you a great opportunity to gather your thoughts and connect with your inner self.

I dine alone about half the time -- always sit at the counter when alone; generally at a booth or table when with someone. And you're not really alone because you talk to the waitress and the other people at the counter! It's actually quite a social way to dine!

I think it shows independence. I waitress, and I sometimes dine alone. I dine at our local breakfast place at least once a week alone, its nice to not have kids around or not have my husband there its nice to enjoy a meal without having to find conversation. I can just sip my tea and relax before I go off to my day of work, or errands. It gives me time to get my head together, make my lists or just people watch. I work at a restaurant near an outlet mall, so we often have single parties. They often enjoy reading a book, or newspaper, or sometimes just eat and run. I also LOVE to go to the movies by myself. Its nice to be independent and not have the need to bring someone else along, sometimes you need you time. Hope this is the answer you were looking for.

I think it's good for everyone to do it every so often. It helps build confidence (if you have a problem doing things on your own), plus, it's a good time to do some reading, reflecting, whatever ... quiet time. You don't always have to have conversation while dining. Then again, you might meet someone nice to converse with that you never would have done if you hadn't gone by yourself. Creat opportunities for yourself ... this is a good way to do that.

i think dining alone during the day is fine, sometimes you need some you time. At night i think it would be a little embarassing, because it seems like you are really lonely....in a restaurant that is, anywhere else, hey do what fits you!

i dont mind dining alone since you dont have to worry about the other person being slow or too fast and you dont have to talk you can just eat. However eating with someone is fun as well

I have to read or have a laptop or something unless theres outside scenery like at an airport restaurant or if Im just really relaxed. Sometimes I joke to the staff that Im with "all of my friends". Im up and down with my moods and sometimes cant enjoy it too much esp in a really crowded restaurant. It reminds me of that movie where everyone goes totally silent and stares when you say "table for ONE?" and about 5 busboys noisily remove every single plate and utensil from your huge table and youre left there like a spectacle. Pretty funny.

I do it, but I don't like to do it. It makes me look lonely, when in reality I have a lot of friends, but most work on the weekends, have kids they don't want to bring out, are low on cash, etc. and I might just be having a craving for something, so I go anyway.

I don't mind it much. I just bring a book, magazine (both cooking related) or a notebook to write. I get great service since they think I'm a food critic. So I look like I'm working! Heh.
