In short, because they believe they will find a better life elsewhere. The specific reasons for emigration are as numerous as are emigrees. Pre-historic man emigrated due to food supplies and climate, as do many other species (birds flying south for the winter, for example), and this continues to be a cause of emigration. The potato famine in Ireland, for example, resulted in thousands of Irish immigrants coming to the US. Cultural reasons can also play a large part in a decision to emigrate - like the Puritans looking for religious freedom and emigrating to America.
You can break it down to a few core causes:
1. Social - people will emigrate if they cannot acclimate to the social conditions that they are faced with.
2. Political - political persecution or repression have historically been factors in emigration.
3. Religious - see above.
4. Economic - again, see above. Lack of jobs or economic opportunity elsewhere has been the major cause of emigration to the US.
5. Militaristic - Fleeing a war is another common cause of emigration. Jews fleeing Eastern Europe during the Holocaust is a good example.
Hope this helps.

Hello! I am Mexican, and I have met many people who have to emigrate to USA. They have different reasons, but one of the most frequently is because here in Mexico, people do not find a very good job, someone who has a regular work gets 50 dollars per day, other only earns 5 and that is not enough for paying all their expenses, otherwise, there is people who can not find a job because they are 35 or more years, but there are young men who are looking for some adventure.Other have a part of their families in USA, therefore, they immigrate, a family must be together. And finally probably the most important: There are jobs in USA which American people do not like, that is just a case of offering and demanding. ¿Why must not they emigrate?, just because they don not have money, if they prefered to live there to stayed here, and working hard in a honest way, have all the things that probably here never would not have.I would like people could live where they choose, and emigrates were not rejected just because.

I would imagine for the hope of finding better opportunity in an environment that fosters opportunity. Now, of course there can be many reasons why depending where you are emigrating from. In most cases it would probably be quality of life, career opportunities or political reasons such as opression from a dictatorial government...maybe even famine.
