Card reader? You mean something to read (and write?) to memory cards (like SD/MMC, Memory Stick, etc.)?
With Windows XP, many of these readers do not need software. The drivers are built-in. However, some do not have built-in drivers and will need you to load software. Usually comes on CD-ROM. However, often you can download the drivers from the company web site.

The card reader should come with software/drivers with it. You may also want to check to see if you can download the needed software/drivers from that company's website if you cannot install it from you damaged cdrom drive.

1. Cdroms are starting at $10.49 for a Samsung 48x IDE CD-ROM Drive at http://pricewatch.com
I would buy a burner, or even a DVD burner (reads / writes CDs, also!), as they are inexpensive, too.
2. Usually, for all the five card readers I have installed, the USB port just loads them. No special software needed.
They also work great in http://pclinuxos.com LiveCDrom
