What's the best temporary fix for a dented car that's beginning to rust a little before I can afford to take it to the body shop? Does anyone know of any reputable body shops in the Eastern NC area?

Don't worry about it. Unless you plan on waiting years before repairs a little surface rust will not hurt anything -- it will only rust a few microns into the metal and this will be sanded off during repairs anyway.

The rust is exposed metal. If it is just beginning to rust, don't worry about scraping anything. You can go to an auto body supply store, one who sells paint and supplies to body shops, and see if they have the touch up color for your car. It's as easy as applying nail polish. If they don't, they should be able to mix up a half pint of paint to match your car. Usually, they don't sell to the general public, but if you are buying such a small quantity for touch up purposes, they might not have a problem with that. Do not reduce or thin out the paint. Leave it thick, just like they mixed it. Stir it well and use a small artist's paint brush to apply it, just like nail polish, to the bare metal areas to shield the metal from further corrosion and to look better than a rust spot until you have a chance to get it repaired. It should work for a couple of months. Re-apply as needed.

you can try filling the dents with car wax if the dent is not too deep. That will slow down the rust.

Rub a wax crayon over the crack you can use the same colour as the paint work if fussy, then polish over it with some wax polish. This will seal it until you go to the body shop.

clear nail polish where the paint is cracked or missing. Or if its too big to do that, go to a atuo parts store and buy a rattle can of clear spray paint and coat the affected area...
