Aluminum, as well as all metals, has a "grain" structure. This structure is strong, but like everything else that breaks and is "fixed", is always weaker than when new. Besides the obvious dent, there is damage that cannot be seen. This is the damage that will lead to rim failure.

Not true. www.wheelsamerica.com
They will repair ANY non-chrome aluminum wheel for less than $200.00 and warranty it for life. I work in insurance claims and we pay to have hundreds of wheels repaired every year with no ill effects whatsoever.

The mechanic is correct--Aluminum doesn't flex like steel does. Aluminum is very strong, but very brittle as well if you make any attempt at hammering it or flexing it back. Plus, aluminum doesn't really like being heated up for adjustments like steel does.

Aluminum bends in ONE direction, but bending it back will cause it to break.

It's "toast"
