If you want to call the Midwest the South... We have a lot of Japanese auto suppliers and OEMs and few are organized.

Detroit's problem is that the "Big Three" resisted increasing fuel efficiency of their vehicles and now nobody wants to drive a car that gets 20 mpg when gas prices are $3 a gallon. The American auto industry shot themselves in the foot and then the American Government stabbed the American workers in the back with outsourcing.

I think that there is more to your reasoning than you acknowledge. Unions are not the only problem with the U.S. auto industry. Afterall, haven't the unions offered many concessions to the Big Three? Anyway, I think a lot of the problems with the U.S. industry is that it produces cars that people don't buy the way they used to. Japanese cars get better mileage, have good safety records and look more appealing to many Americans. I think that when the U.S. industry does more to create a car people like, then you will have a better domestic industry. Until then, blame the unions all you want, but it wont solve the problem.

Why do you think the Japanese placed their new plants in the South? They saw what the unions up North had done to the big three. Unions aren't very popular down South. I guess people would rather have jobs than pay union dues to guarantee their future unemployment.

Norm, you hit the nail on the head. Unions ruin jobs by promoting laziness. Companies cannot continue paying high wages for lazy workers who sponge off the system. I wonder when people will wake up to the fact that unions look out for union bosses and nobody else.
