I have a 1996 Dodge Avenger that needs transmission work. At a repair shop, I was told it could cost me around $2000. I'm a student, and I can't afford that - plain and simple. I figured if law students under a lawyer's supervision can help clients at a discount and if I can get my haircut by a cosmetology student at a discount, maybe the same would apply for cars at an auto mechanic school.

I would contact local schools in your area that train auto mechanics. I instruct auto mechanics at a career college and we do not work on cars from the public. This is due to liability issues as well as how long we would want to have the vehicle to do this type of repair.

Most but not all will do the job for you. Usually as long as the car is not over ten years old and depending on the job. The real pisser is you better not be in a hurry for it because it could take weeks for them to get the job done.

hey... my hubby is going to our local community college... taking autobody repair... and he got into an accident in the schools parking lot... they let him bring in the other guys car to work on it... they're allowed to bring in thier own cars or friends... talk to the teacher of an autobody class either in your school or a closeby one... to see if he'll allow one of his students to use your car to get experience... most places would be happy as long as they have the time... they might be able to rebuild your tranny... which will cost you ALOT less than getting a new tranny,,, good luck with your car... email me if you have anymore questions... maybe my hubby could try and figure out what's wrong with your tranny for you... so you have some idea what to say to the autonody class...

Yes, take it to your local high school and have them work on it. You will have to buy the parts but the labor comes free. Also if they screw it up the school is obligated to pay for repairs. The shop teacher will take care of it while its in there.

That may get them in to some legal issues. (I doubt it)
