A stated 30W Fluorescent will actually consume around 50W. This is due to power losses in the control gear.

So the running costs will be 1/20 of whatever you get charged for a KWh.

1/2- 1p per hour would be a typical figure

Around one half cent per hour.

First of all, each time you turn on a fluorescent bulb you instantly use about the full rating to start it. So, your first hour would be about 60 watts and each succeeding hour would add 30 watts. So 10 hours would use 330 watts. Since your electricity is charged by the kilowatt hour (or 1000 watts) you would use 0.33 (about a third) of a kilowatt (kW) for 10 hours. If your local power company charges 12 cents per kW (an average amount in the US) it would cost you 4 cents for every 10 hours. Look at your electric bill to see what your rate is and adjust accordingly.

Remember, you use an hour's extra electricity every time you turn it on AND you shorten the life of a fluorescent every time you turn it on so Fluorescent isn't the best choice for something like a bathroom where people might come in and out and turn it on several times an hour. But, for most everywhere else they are the most energy-saving and long-lasting bulbs to use.

30 watts is 3% of 1000watts. 1000watts on for 1 hour is 1 kilowatt hour. 1 kw hour costs around 16 pence dependent on your supplier. The cost for the 30watt bulb will therefore be 3% of 16 pence. 1% of 16 pence is 0.16 therefore 3% is 0.48p which is near enough half a penny.

If your energy cost is 12p per kwh, it will cost about 1/3 of 1p per hour.

0.03 kw x 1h x 12p = £0.0036p (0.36p) NOT £0.36!!

This equals approx. £29.00 for the appx.8000 hour life of the lamp. The equivalent brightness gls lamp would be about a 150 watt and would cost £144.00 for energy plus 8 lamps @ 45p. total £148.00 !!!

It depends on your electricity tariff. One unit is a kWh (kiloWatt hour). A 30W lightbulb, in an hour, uses 0.03kWh, so uses 0.03 units of electricity.

If your tariff is 9p per kWh, then an hour of your 30W lightbulb would cost 0.27p.
