I own many foreign movies, so I own an all-region DVD player. The USA uses region 1 NTSC format. Japan uses Region 2. Hong Kong uses Region 3. Red China uses Region 6. The upper number 9 is for airplanes. Some European nations and Australia use PAL, not NTSC also. I once ordered a movie from Australia before i bought my all-rgion player, so I couldn't play it.

I don't think I can top that first answer, but, yeah, I only ever see Region 1 and Region 2 discs floating around. Region 1 is for the U.S. and Region 2 is usually for Europe

Region 1 is the States, Region 2 is most of Europe, but there is no simple relationship between coding regions and PAL/NTSC - otherwise Japan (NTSC) would have to have Region 1.
