Hard drive crashes are a pain. The best outcome when your hard drive has crashed is to simply use the data from your backup disk. Most people, however, still do not backup their data. When a hard drive crashes, you typically will not be able to access any of your data. Even if the operating system can still run, your data may be inaccessible or damaged. The only way to recover from such a failure is to typically restore data from a backup onto a new drive with all the software installed from scratch. If no backup is available, then the data is either lost or you can opt to pay for a service that will try to recover your lost data for you. These services are expensive but chances are your data is even more valuable. Contact a hard drive data recovery expert to see whether your data can be recovered.

Assuming the hard drive isnt broken, theres a chance you can save at least some of the data.
You can put knoppix (a version of linux, there are others that work but I've used knoppix for this before) onto a flash drive and boot from that (get someone who knows linux to help with this).
Windows wont see the files still lingering on the hard drive because they're in unformatted partitions. linux will ignore that and see the files.
Its not perfect and wont always work, depending on what you've done to the hard drive. But its something to try.

If the disk was unformatted, how did you put information on to it?

One word. Knoppix.
