Yes, you can do this, but usually it is for just a few classes. An example would be if you knew the teacher at one university was impossible to please and to get a good grade, you could take that course at another university or community college through a consortium agreement and transfer the course to the college you plan to graduate from. There are also colleges within a college... college of business and college of liberal arts at UCLA is an example. You could double major and have a degree from both colleges within the same college name (UCLA).

Some of my friends split their classes between a community college and a University, so they go to both. I don't know if that's what you're asking though.
