I believe you are advised to have it done after you´ve turned 35, but really I hate to think about any invasion. Is this wrong of me?

As far as I know it is only advised if you had an AFP test and you tested as high risk (which doesn't guarantee the baby has a birth defect). The amnio is completely voluntary as it carries a very small risk of miscarriage. It is completely your decision. It has no benefit to the unborn child.

The only reason your advised to have it done is because people over a certain age have higher chances of having a baby with down syndrome. You do not have to get it done if you don't want to. Tell your doctor how you feel about they can't make you get it done. If your baby does have downs then theres nothing they can do about they can't reverse it. I was 19 when I had my first baby and I did not get the test. There is a chance that it can be harmful to you and the baby. Why take the chance when there is nothing anyone can do if the baby does have downs? I personaly would not do it. I am pregnant with baby 2 and I am not going to get it done this time either. It's not wrong of you to not want it done your choice. good luck

I was 37 when I was pregnant with my last child and they wanted to do one on me also. They said it was to check if the baby might have downs syndrome. Personally, I felt it was because I had really good insurance! I refused the test. I believe it was only 86% accurate anyway and if it showed the baby to possibly have Downs, we wouldnt have chosen to abort (which was what my dr. explained was the main reason for the early detection). On the other hand, if you were aware of a possible Downs baby, the hospital would be better prepared to handle it at birth. There were too many things that the amniocentesis put at risk for me to take the chance. Remember, its YOUR body and YOUR baby. Don;t let them quilt trip you into whatever choice you make!

Im really just learning about it but I think its a personal choice, you have to know how you feel before hand, if there are problems what you are going to do about the pregnancy, if it doesnt matter either way then I wouldnt necessarily take the test. If the doctor says everything has been normal in your pregnancy so far then maybe i wouldnt take it, but Im not a doctor. I dont want any invasion either but i also have this burning need to know everything is ok. I dont think Ill have it, I hope this helps its just my opinion :)

My sister in law was a gotta have for this test and everthing came back ok and she carried the baby for term (more or less) and the baby had complications that I know how the baby ended up that way but she kept from her doctor and the baby died...It had a syndrome that was not detected by amnio
Oh, I failed to mention the fact that husband and wife are related
Personally, I vote this test down; kids are precious

You always have a choice! They have other tests that are usually accurate to test for defects. Would you get an abortion if the baby is disabled? if you would I would suggest getting it done but if not it's only knowing before. Chances are higher but still unlikely that the baby will have a disablility or defect. If a doctor pushes you after saying "no" and you feel strongly about it, get a new doctor!! GOOD LUCK and congrats!

Dont think of it as an invasion. Chances are you are just worried about recieving bad news. Think of it this way, if you were going to get really sick and could know ahead of time to prepare your self, would you? If there is a problem with the baby it would be better to know ahead of time so you could prepare your self on how to deal with it. It would make things a lot easier in long run. Then it would not be such a shock, It wouldnt make the news easier, but it would be better to deal with before the baby comes. For all you know you could be worrying about nothing. I hope this helps. Good luck and Good health to you and yours. Congrats!

No this is definatly not wrong. Refuse that! Your only 35 your probably perfectly fine. What matters is that you are going to love your child no matter what. If you don't want to take the risk of having an amnio done and you don't want to know what they have to say about it then DON'T! This is your baby and your body you make the decisions! Don't let anyone tell you differently!

No, it could be harmful to the baby and the reason you are given the choice of the amnio test is because there is a greater risk of women over a certain age of having a Downs baby. If the baby was to be downs theres no changing that, test or not. It is not wrong of you to not want the test AND it is your right!!

Its really up to you...but if your Dr. has recommended it then I would take it.....I had it done and there is less than a 1% chance of anything happening...My friend had it twice and was fine....its very quick and there is no pain involved at all.....I think its worth having it done to ease your mind....It is the only test that is 100% accurate in finding chromosonal defects...but again its your choice and there is no right or wrong.....Good Luck!
