seriosuly,

the old rule use to be NEVER put bettas with any other fish EVER.

but i've read on the internet about people having tanks with bettas mixed with other fish like guppies and others. a local petstore here has it's female bettas in a tank with redtail sharks and other things.

what about males? I have two guppies, a platy, a spotted cory, and a clown pleco. any chance I get a male betta in my 10 gallon tank?

i love how bettas are made out to be a visious little boogers....when in all reality the only fish they attack are other male bettas a female bettas when they are not ready to breed. bettas THRIVE in open water with other fish, their fins get bigger and more colorful and they live longer, happier lives!! female bettas can be put together, as well with other fish. males can not be housed together but are usually fine with other community fish! i have 6 neon tetras, one pleco, 5 cardinal tetras and a male betta in my tank, he loves it and is so much more vibrant since i got him. your tank set up would be perfect for an additional fish, especially a betta!! i say go for it, its a lively and colorful addition, and it won't terrorize or kill any other fish, except male bettas.

I kept my male Betta with my community fish. I never had a problem. My tank had 4 white clouds, a bamboo shrimp, a fresh water crab and 2 tetras. No one ever got hurt by my Betta. But it is very true, do not put him in a tank with aggressive fish or another male Betta. Ad by all means DO NOT add 2 females to a tank that has one male Betta. I see this at pet stores and the females have to keep fighting each other until one is killed.

The clown pleco won't have any issue with a betta. He is to big, and tough. Plus he doesn't look at all betta like. Like wise the cory cat should be fine. The platty can out run a betta. The guppy could be an issue if they are fancy male guppy. A betta might mistake the flowing fins for a betta. Plus fancy guppy are the fastest of swimmers.

As far as females they tend to ignore any non betta. Some times they will bully other fish, but not beyond chasing them out of their part of the tank. Females will fight with other females until they work out a pecking order. My female betta live with my mollies, pearl gourami, pleco, platty.

PS- Redtailed sharks are generally labeled as semi-aggressive. I wouldn't want to keep a male betta with them. (Males are poor swimmers due to their fins.) Short term while the redtails are small might work.

The ACCURATE rule is to never put male bettas with any other bettas, because males are extremely territorial towards other bettas.
Males (and females) do make fine candidates for community tanks, provided that you don't keep them fin-nipping fish like barbs or certain tetras.
You could certainly add a betta to your tank, but you should get rid of the pleco, he'll outgrow the tank soon. You might also want to get another couple cories, as they are schoolers and enjoy being in groups.

Fish compatibility
Your male betta will thrive living on his own, or as the only male of the species in a peaceful community aquarium with smaller fish. Females can be kept together.

lol so many questions like this
and i always say
put the betta in with the fish?
like really try it out
if he attacks them OBVIOUSLY take him out
if not
leave them for liek half an hour and see?
ok so lets say he kills a guppy or even both
go to the pet store
and buy another one or two for what liek 3 $?

and i say they CAN and CANT be put in together
i have bettas that are fine with other males
and then i have some that you cant put any other kind of fish in with it
it depends on the personality?

I have added guppies to my betta fish bowl. THey get along great. Bettas can not be added to a tank with other bettas. They will fight and kill each other. If it is possible DO NOT put your betta in a tank that has a filter. He will end up getting stuck to the filter part that goes in the tank and drown. I know it's a fish, but Bettas need oxygen to survive, that is why they go to the top quite often so that they can get a breath of air. But, when they get stuck to the filter they cannot get loose because their fins are so big they are not stong enough to get loose.

Male beta's are aggressive towards other male beta's. Normally you can house them with other docile fish without problems. Just make sure they aren't housed with anything that is a fin nipper (red tailed shark, etc). They can go well with guppies, angels, and other species that are calm. Just don't put two males in a tank.
