Free promotion is possible and I would first start with a call to your local newspaper to talk to an editor in their "Business" section. Most papers will run articles on newly established businesses as part of their normal circulation schedule.
You can expect to get 2-3 paragraphs about you, the business, the product and some high level particulars like location and phone number.
Don't forget to look for the weekly periodicals as well. We have 3 different weekly publications in my town that cover a number of local interest stories so these are another great resource.
My experience with fliers has shown limited success. They're not truly free since there is a cost to have them done. They are also very limited in their audience reach in that even if you manage to hand out 1,000 fliers (which is a lot) and you get a 1-2% interest/read rate (most people throw them away) you're really only reaching 10-20 people.
It's a lot of work with a moderate expense to reach a small group.
Another angle is to seek out opportunities to donate your products to local charities for them to use as auction/giveaway items. Your local Little League, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Church, or Scouting organizations are always having raffles/drawings to benefit a particular cause. Often times they will solicit local businesses for donated products and offer a "thank you" by mentioning the donating business by hand.
There are a number of cost efficient ways to get the word out, free is tricky.
Consignment arrangements with local vendors are a great way to get your product out. Offer to stock their shelves at no cost until the product is sold.
Look at local craft fairs as another possible venue.
Good luck!

You have a computer... If you have a printer... you could print out your hand made fliers/flyers.
And nail or tape them on trees/poles/boards around the community.
