In a long low style tank, plan on buying about 3-5 pounds per gallon. For the taller styles plan on 2-3 pounds per gallon. This should be an adequate amount for general fish keeping, but you may want to adjust for personal taste or if you plan on having live plants. The size of the gravel will also impact how much you need, but in a 30 gallon that will make only a minor difference.

The basic equation for figuring out how much gravel is multiplying 2lbs per gallon. Now you do have to take in account if the measurement of your gallons are high or wide. But your always better off with a little more, than too little. You could always return any unused gravel. I've found that it is much harder to match up the gravel in the tank with newly bought gravel.
2 inches above the black band should look great!

It doesn't go by pounds it goes by inches. 1-2 inches across the bottom. 1 inch in the front working to 2" to the rear. Since tanks come in all shapes and sizes a 30 gallon tall will not hold the same amount of gravel that a 30 gallon long will.
1-2 " is what you are looking to have.

Go for about an 1.5 to 2 inches to cover the bottom. That way you have enough depth to cover the bases of any plants you put in there.
For my 55 gallon it was recommended to put in about 55-65 pounds of gravel which looks like about 1.5 inches (w/ 65 lbs.), so I would probably recommend about 5 to 10 lbs more then your gallons are.

It is not pounds but depth for the type of filter system and what you want it to look like....A underground (not recomended) about 2 to 3 inches for 1/2 inch rock...Box or external tank...What ever looks good to you but besure that it will not be a problem for the size of fish you will have...always set up tank about two weeks before adding fish...Good luck
