A 404 error simply means, page not found. If the page doesn't exist or has been taken out of service, nothing will help that.

If he gets the error message no matter what site he tries to go to, then there's a problem with his Internet connection. The first thing to do would be to make sure everything's connected on his end. If it is and he still can't get online, he needs to contact his ISP ... they could be having a glitch OR they can talk him through fixing the problem on his end.

If he only gets the 404 on one particular website, then the problem is with the website ... they may be out of business, they may have changed their web address, or maybe they're just having problems. In that case, there's nothing he can do except wait for them to fix it, find the site's new address, or find the info he's looking for somewhere else.

ccording to Wikipedia - Internet Explorer will not display custom pages unless they are larger than 512 bytes, opting to instead display a "friendly" error page. This default behaviour can be changed under Tools | Internet Options by clicking on the Advanced tab and un-checking the 'Show friendly HTTP error messages' check box.

Personally I endorse the previous advice to swith to Mozilla Firefox

Simply stop using I E 6 and get fire fox. I hate windows with a vengance and even more so their stupid internet explorer. I'll never go back to I E ever. Fire fox runs so much more smoothly and I don't get all those stupid error messages. FYI it's not the computer with the problems or the errors it's stupid windows. Microsoft most days needs a swift kick in the butt. Get fire fox problem solved. That's a web browser FYI.

i used to get the exact same problem in ie 6 whenever i'd try to log in to anything including yahoo. all i did as go to tools then internet options and set EVERYTHING to default. also, if he downgraded from ie7 you may need to remove some add ons that conflict with the browser. good luck!
