Hi UK builder here, Under the new UK Building regulations Part B ( internal fire spread ) you would need to have fire doors if the property is a single block / a house turned into flats not various blocks like student campus etc.these need much more. The fire regs don't change from council to council as they are written into statute ( law ) the local authority and, or the fire authority must enforce these statutes.

If the house has three floors ( including the ground floor ) then fire doors must be fitted with suitable closers ( perko or other type, listed as "positive self-closing device" ) and intermicent seal ( this swells in the heat ) . A means of escape must be incorporated. Rising but hinges are not allowed and nor are self locking door latches. As you can see it is a legal requirement to have fire doors, sorry.

Does the property belong to you? Rented accommodation such as a flat are fitted with fire doors to meet building regs. You may also be required to have fire doors fitted if you live above a workshop etc, Sounds like you need to talk to your local planning office to confirm that it is still a requirement for you to have them.

yes it would be illegal to remove or change these doors ..you could all ways change them for new fire doors as some now are quite attractive...check with your local council as i believe the regs change in April as regards the need for self closures
