Yep, it's bread and edible. When I was growing up, I would see people by-passing it and I would eat it and my cousins would frown and make noises. What's the big deal about that part of the bread? I noticed you refered to it as the butt end. Maybe that's why?

Yup!
It all started in Japan when I was introduced to a cheaper way of getting bread. When living in Japan... Every yen counts!
They would package the 'ears' (that's whatthey call them there 'Mimi pan') and sell them real cheap. I just got used to it.
Now that i'm stateside, I go for the ends first.

Occasionally. Depends on my mood. Its good for making toast and putting some butter and jelly on there or some peanut butter and syrup...mmm. It holds all the stuff on there better than a regular piece of bread. I think so any way.
