Would you say that it is safe to remove porcupine quills yourself at home without a vet overseeing? Why or why not? Only well thought out answers are welcome so none of that "your pet could die if you do it yourself". K?

No I'm not waiting for an answer because it happened just now. This was actually an almost every other week incident when I had my dogs. They liked to hunt, what can I say.

I suppose any one could do it them self, but it would be far more painful to you pet and a vet could give a local anesthetic to help relieve this. Also I would want my pet to receive antibiotics to stop any infections. And last The further the quill went in the deeper the tissue it touch and the larger the hole possible need for stitches. I do hope you are not waiting for an answer, your opening statement leads me to believe it was taken care of.

I wouldn't say it is safe to remove porcupine quills yourself. The quills are very tough and go in deep, if you think it is safe to remove the quills yourself then do it.
I personally would not, I would be taking my dog to the vet and have some local anesthetics so the dog isn't in so much pain while removing the quills.
Since this seems to happen a lot with your dogs I would figure out why they seem to find the porcupine and get into trouble. Maybe you need to fence your yard in or an area.
Good luck

I would take my pet to the vet because if I had a porcupine quill in me I would want that area numb before it is pulled out. Plus the vet can give the pet drugs to prevent infections.

If it was my pet, I would take them to the vet so that they can remove the quills for me. I am not sure, but I think that the quills might start an infection of some sort, and if it does, the vet would be able to prevent it so that my pet will not get sick.

i don't think so. you may end up leaving a barb from a quill underneath the skin. they tend to move deeper with time and cause infection. if it is a thing that happens all the time most likely the vet has shown you the proper way to do it.
