I have a nephew who is presently attending junior school.

During a lesson recently on English, his teacher wrote the following sentence on the blackboard and ask the class students to explain the meaning of the sentence.

"We are going to the bank to catch some fish".

I think they are studying grammer and the meaning of sentences.

Most of the students questioned said it meant a group of people going to the river bank to catch fish.

However, my nephew saw it differently. It seemed to him it meant a group of people going to the bank($) to catch some crooks and so gave this answer.

However, his teacher is not apparently impressed. She thought he was trying to be funny and cocky. So, he was punished to stand in the class.

Yet, is there anything wrong with the sentence? Can a teacher punished a student for this?

I think that the teacher was wrong to punish the student like this based on what you presented. I can see how your nephew might see the sentence this way. All too often teachers throw curve balls to the students to trick them. This gets the students expecting trick questions and whatnot. Sounds like your nephew might have thought this was a trick question and that he tried to figure it out.

Of course, I was not there to see how everything happened. It is possible that there is more to this story than you know. However, even if the kid was acting up, standing in the class is an inappropriate punishment. There are better ways to handle it. I am betting this is a old-school type teacher who likes to hand out punishments like this.

It is a perfectly good answer and I think the teacher is wrong to punish the kid.

If "fish" is a legitimate euphanism for "croks" then YES-this is a perfectly good sentence. AND it demonstrates creative thinking. Unfortunately creative thinkers are often misunderstood, and sometimes suffer for other people's un-appreciation for their creativity. BUT he should not be discouraged. His creative thinking, if developed fully, could someday serve him and/or this world well.

Well, I can tell you this, when I looked at the sentence the first thing I thought was"what the hell does that mean?" I think it is a poor example and the teacher is wrong!

While his use of the word "bank" is not incorrect that is not the one that is commonly associated with that word. The rest of the class seems to have gotten it.

Did she punish him because he has a reputation for being cocky and disruptive in class and usually comes up with things like that (not with the best of intentions)?
