According to my enormous dictionary, it's origins are unknown, but it is a 'musician's engagement for a specified time'.

Doesn't really help, I know, but it lets me show off about my enormous dicitonary!

A "gig" is just short for "job" and doesn't necessarily only pertain to band jobs.

a job got to play a gig ex im going to Peteys to play a gig. another way to say it im going to peteys bar to rock out tonight

I would go with the "engagement" definition. It's the one that seems most likely.
