Lynch has maintained his refusal to comment on the film's "meaning" or symbolism, leading to much discussion and multiple interpretations. A common interpretation, however, is that the first part of the film is a dream of the real Diane Selwyn (Watts), who has cast her dream-self as the innocent and hopeful "Betty Elms" (fashioned after a Winkie's waitress named Betty) and reconstructed her life, history, and persona into something like an old Hollywood movie, in which she is successful, charming, and lives the fantasy life of a soon-to-be-famous actress. The second half of the film serves to present the bleak reality of Diane's actual life, a life where her personal and professional wishes and desires have fallen tragically short.

I dont know I cant figure it out either. It has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I dont get the monster benhind the building but I think it is about a woman becoming lesbian and the change is expressed between the monster and the secret box.

I almost agree with Lin, but I think the dream ended when the cowboy came in and said: "Hey pretty girl, time to wake up!" Then we saw reality. In the dream, Betty was a young actress brimming with enthusiasm about coming to LA, in reality she lived been there and wasn't doing well. In the dream she was helping Rita who fell love with her, in reality they had a fling, but Rita was getting married to the director. So ***SPOILER COMING!!!*** (in reality) she had Rita whacked, had a nervous breakdown then killed herself.

It was all a dream,in real life the blond was a failing actress and the brunette(who she was in love with) really hated her and was sleeping with the director guy.Her aunt was dead and her aunts neighbor was really the director guys mom.The blond ended up getting the brunette killed and it was all just a bad dream that she was having(out of guilt, cause she loved her).if you want you can email me and I can break it down for you more!I loved this movie, its one of my fav's!
