My boyf's daughter was using that stuff for a while and she said it worked for the zits but it dried her face out. She recently switched to Mary Kay products.
The thing is, if your face is too oily you get zits. If your face is too dry, your face will feel the need to produce more oil, and you'll get zits. Your best bet IMO is to use products that are gentle on your skin, keep your face clean, keep your dirty hands off your face (hands are filthy). Use moisturizer where you need it (only as much as you need) and go easy on your skin.
All those chemicals and scrubbing are probably what's making your skin unhappy. Skin is made up of a bunch of living cells. When you put them through all that scrubbing and products twice a day... that can be rough on them.
But to answer your question, most face-washing regimes will cause your skin to get a bit worse before it gets better. If in the end Proactive doesn't work for you, you can try this stuff: http://www.murad.com/proactiv.html?roiid=4629&oid=1&WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=GOOGLE&cid=315012
The doctor that is behind it is a dermatologist that explains how Murad doesn't just treat acne, it treats the skin so the skin is healthy. It makes sense to me, I mean you don't want to use something too harsh on your face to fight the acne if it's gonna ruin the rest of the skin on your face in the process. That's like using spray paint to killl a mosquito. Yeah you might kill the bug but you'll get everything covered in spraypaint in the process, and that doesn't do you any good.
Having healthier skin overall would make sense to treat acne.

It dried out my face when I used it too; they advised me to cut back to cleaning my face once a day instead of the recommended 2 times. By the time I was done using my first shipment, I noticed no significant changes in my skin, so I stopped buying it.
Not to say that it doesn't work; I just don't think it works for everybody. In the time since, I've learned that the less chemicals you use on your face, the better off it looks so I take the "less is more" approach now. Good luck!

I have a friend who used proactive for 6 months and still wasn't satisfied with it...not to mention the monthly cost regardless of use of it. I got her hooked on Mary Kay, and in only 2 weeks of consistently using it her skin made a complete 360. She loves it and has used it now for a year!!!

I've been on it for about 2 weeks and Only used the mask at night for about 10 mins twice a week UNTIL I saw the Commerical that said to use the Mask to "Spot Treat" your Zits.
So What I have been doing is at night I wash my Face, use the toner, and Lotion... THEN I Dab the mask on my Trouble areas and sleep with it on overnight! My Skin has cleared up about 30% in two days!!
Maybe this will Help you!?

then perhaps you shld discontinue it for it's not only drying out your skin but also causing you to breakout more. proactiv works but it depends on individuals. perhaps proactiv is not suitable for you. go to a skin doctor is your skin problem is bothering you that much.

It takes about a month to completely see the difference; but it starts working right when you begin to use it. Use the refining mask to spot treat your problem areas overnight & be sure to use it in the morning & at night. It worked for me & to everyone that thinks it causes reverse effects : JUST GIVE IT TIME!! Hope this helps! ( :
