do government officials act on their own behalf or the public's?

The term govt. officials usually indicates a politician or a political appointee which equals self interest.

BTW, there should be no such thing as a govt. 'official', as the politicians are ELECTED BY US and therefore ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK FOR US.

It doesn't often happen that way.

When you speak of "Government Officials" my first thought is that of politicians.

The old politicians, to me, seem to be more concerned about their stability in government jobs with their cushy paychecks.

Sadly, the newer legislators who want to make change for the good are outvoted by those with their own self interests!
