The Rainy Day
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

He is comparing life to weather. Although there are rainy days, the sun eventually comes out shining. In life, out of despair rises hope. Even though there are bad days, there are good ones too. Even though things may not have worked out in the past, there are always more opportunities awaiting.

Life is not a bowl of cherries... but we must press on forward, picking ourselves up, getting up each time we fall.

Henry Longfellow is comparing his life to the harshness of the weather which has cold, dreary days. His thoughts cling to the past as the vine to the wall in sadness. This is the situation of man, yet there is a shining sun behind the clouds.

I would say that it is about the state of being temporarily depressed. The guy is sad but the basic morale is that the rain will pass, and he will feel better. Good luck.

Behind the hard and tough day, there's always something good infront for you to look at. Dont just look at the bad things happening, there's always good things coming in.

sounds like he is comparing life to the seasons ...youth is gone, and they are in the autumn of their life remembering the past but realizing the sun can still shine on the phase of their life they are in now...the autumn or middle years

be cool...
