do you know what's the diff between "reboot" and "reformat" ?
Reboot is restarting your computer (turn computer off and on)
Reformat is clean out everything in your computer, and refresh reinstall everything back on.
I bet you meant "reformat" in your question (because you're afraid of losing your data). If you have an external HD (harddrive), you're set. Just copy the data from your computer to that ext. HD, format your computer, install everything back on, transfer back your data back. You're up and run again. This is the easiest way. You can get a 500gig ext HD prebuilt for around 200, unless u want to made your own, it would cost you much less than that, and it's not hard to do: buy a HD, buy an external enclosure, put them together, connect cable together, you're on, i do this all the times, save me money.
Plus, having ext HD is a great way to back up your files. It is very important to have one. And this is the best time for you to get one. You could get any size of back up HD, but i would go at least 200, since you will be using it more to back up your files later anyway, and it won't cost that much.
I wouldn't want you to mess around with the internal of the computer, therefore, I won't recommend you to install the 2nd HD as an internal, instead external, for this reason. Unless u know what you are doing, then go ahead, but external HD is the easiest route for novice people. Just plug in and use, no need to mess around with internal computer.
Your other route to backup those 35gb of data, is burn them onto DVD discs, not to mention CD, you don't want to mess with many CDs, don't you?. Most DVD discs are only 4.7gb (but the reality you can have only upto 4.38gb of space per disc, you would need 8 of them to burn all your data, of you could get the 9.4 DVD disc, but still, you would need 4 of them, and this dual layers DVD disc are much more expensive than 4.7 discs.
When you back up your datas with CD/DVD, this is it, you can't update them or you can't do anything about them, but not that case with another back up HD. Edit, print, use, delete, whatever u want, all still in one disc, and you can back up over and over again, again, you can't do that with that same CD/DVD, unless yo use the CD-RW or DVD-RW (more expensive and not realiable, they are tended to degraded in less than 3 - 5 yrs, on average.
So, stick with external HD, and you'll just fine.

I assume that 'reboot' is reformat your Operating System.
If your disk condition is good, you can use another computer to open it then back up your data. After that you can format your disk and install new copy of Operating System.

Do a system restore, found under Accessories, system tools tab. restore it to a date you know it worked. if that doesn't work, get a flash drive, and put all your data on it.
