I am considering selling my home with in 5 years and moving to Mexico. I will be 50 and will probably still need to work. I am an American, I work as a nurse. I speak Spanish pretty fluently. Will I be able to get a decent job to cover expenses? how much is rent and can I buy a small home or condo there? I also have a degree in Travel and Tourism and could maybe use that degree to obtain a job, any suggestions? How much $ will I need initially, and how do I start? Any suggestions of web site or info from people who have done this would be appreciated. Gracias!

The only decent money you can earn is working for an American company. Lucky you have 5 years to study and plan. Start reading Ex-Pat message boards of which there are many for Mexico. The rule is, visit first (a number of places) and when you settle on a place - rent for at least 6 months before buying. 50 is a long way from Social Security so I hope the house is worth a lot.

My husband has family that lives just a few hours from Puerto Vallarta. My understanding is that the only way you can get a job is if a regular person in mexico can't preform that duty. Like a Server at a restraunt would not be an option for you. I recomend Real Estate or Insurance or something like that. I have 2 friends in puerto Vallarta that are in realestate. I would google rental properties and then visit before actually renting. Also, remax is a global company and has pictures and stuff for mexico properties. Have you ever spent time there? I would suggest staying for a month to get the feel of if that is what you want permantly. And not at a resort. At a regular appartment or something that would be similar to where you would live. Oh, one more thing, Mansanillo is very close too and very inexpensive to live. It is 3 hrs from the Guadalajara Airport wich has very cheap airfare for friends or visits back to the US.
