I can't believe no one has said this....Water that appears still on the top can have a current moving swiftly at its deeper depths.

Very deep water usually displays a calm surface while shallow water often shows rough surface water. So if one says about another individual, "Still waters run deep", it indicates that the person may be calm and quiet on the outside but is filled with deep thoughts or feelings inside. That brings to mind the saying, "You can't judge a book by its cover"!

well easy in a sense. think of lakes these are still yet deap. the word run doesnt actually mean movement but is an expression of how deep something is.
if something looks calm and content then look deep and you may find more from the situation.

It's just a figure of speech. Still waters tend to be deep water if they're inland or a river as they don't have anything to make waves on.

It's a figure of speech. One meaning could be that a stable, content person posseses the deep peace that this world cannot give.

The use of run in this saying refers to distance. From Merriam Webster's: to lie in or take a certain direction b: to lie or extend in relation to something.

Good point! Although, that's part of the meaning of the saying--just because someone is quiet, doesn't mean they aren't thinking deep thoughts.

Apparently still water can have undercurrents that are not visible on the surface. Or maybe it can't.
