Nikolai Tesla, the great inventor, achieved dazzling success in the USA although he was (sadly) not always recognized for it during his lifetime --and, often, still not even today. Yet he is behind so much of our modern inventions, often inventions that others received credit for. He is mostly known for his work in the field of electricity, and, indeed, he surpassed Edison. He was a lonely man who lived completely alone, was never married, and was often very misunderstood by society at the time. He claimed that the love of his life was a tamed dove and when she died, he felt his work and his life was over, and did not live much longer after that. In my opinion, he possibly achieved greater success than any inventor that may have ever lived, yet remains largely unrecognized. The question asked was not for a person who received recognition, but one who had achieved "success" at a great expense to his personal life. That was the great Tesla!

Famous in what manner? I know that this is not necessarily an answer, but the truth is that there are probably thousands of famous people who were either reclusive or just enjoyed their own company over that of others. In fact, the right kind of talent mixed with a tendency towards reflection vs. extroversion can be mysterious, which can be very magnetic and lead to a degree of fame in it's own right. Writers, philosophers, song writers, musicians, poets, business moguls- all have famous introverts among their ranks.
