This time i have had it in for 6 months and in the last couple of months i have been getting such stomach pains just like period pains without the bleeding. Seen doctor for swabs for infection and bladder infections and have come back neg but am alittle worried now as the doctor seems like they have no clue.
Anyone with these probs?

I have Mirena and don't have any problems with it. Go back and have the Dr check to see if it is sill in the right place by looking at it through ultra sound.

I had my Merina coil fitted in December 06 and have had no probs until now. I started to have excruciating abdominal pains and have just been prescribed 2 lots of antibiotics for what they suspect is an infection. The doctor who examined me was adamant that the coil was not the problem although when she irritated the neck of my womb this didn't cause a lot of pain, which is usual in cases of an infection. I don't believe that it is an infection as i have no other symptoms ie high temp. vomiting, unusual bowel movements etc... Did you have any problems with your first coil at all? Good luck , and i hope you find out the cause of your pain,

Mirena Coil Abdominal Pain

You are absolutely right, this may well be an effect of the coil. Since your doctor has excluded infection, it may just be that the coil is causing uterine spasm, with your body attempting to expel it.

If the problem continues you should go back to your GP. The quickest way to find out if this is coil related is frankly to remove it and try an alternate method of contraception.

Reading between the lines, Mirenas are only supposed to be used in women wanting contraception for a full 5 years, and the fact that you had another coil in for 5 years, I might suspect you are looking for what some call terminal contraception. That is contraception until the menopause. IF this is the case I would recommend vasectomy, it won't hurt you a bit and it is about time he did something useful!

Although not a user of said coil and a male, I am health care worker with some experience of this method of coil. Due to the hormonal method Of this coil sometimes there is a small incidence of side effects including, bloatdness, acne and depression (although these are rare). This usually resolves within 3-6 months. Occasional ovarian cysts occur but again these usually resolve with no need for any action. If this continues consider Mal- insertion (put in in correctly). Consider re-positioning and take pregnancy test.

Have they scanned the coil to see it's still in place. I have had coils for the last 20 years - no problem, then last year my coil literally fell out. No pain, but quite a shock. So they can move.

I am male but have some experience with the coil (girlfriend and health studies).

It sounds as if the coil may have moved from the uterus (about 2% of coils fitted are expelled or shift position). I suggest that you meet with your gynecologist, have your current coil removed and a new one fitted.

Let me know if you would like to read any of the published studies.

Best of luck.

I had a Merina coil for nine months in total and it gave me pain almost the whole time. I felt as though i was being stabbed inside and whilst the severity reduced it never went away..

Get them to remove it, give yourself a 3 month break while using some other contraception then give it another go.

Good luck! I'm about to investigate the Merina Coil myself!
