based on a 1600 sq. ft. house, figure 20 gallons of base color and 5 gallons of trim color. If in real bad shape, add more. I figure 200-250 sq. ft to the gallon on a double coat.

There is no such thing as a 'regular sized house'. Determine the square footage of each side, add the figures together. That will give you total square feet. Go to a paint store or a big box store that sells exterior paint. Provide them the square footage and they can determine how much paint needed.
You also need to allow paint for windows and trim.
Good Luck

The amount of paint you need to paint the exterior of a house would depend on how many square ft. your have to paint. (the size of your house). It would also make a difference if you are changing the original color. It can take extra coats then also. The quality of the paint can make a difference in coverage too.
You also want to know what kind of paint was used last, oil base or a water base latex. Then if you are talking a stucco surface, you have to use a special paint, not what you would use on wood siding.

Depends on the substrate, the color, the opacity of the paint and the skill of the painter.

Read the label on the can for a coverage per gallon statement and use that as a rough guide. I usually buy a gallon extra to be on the safe side, especially if it's a special color mix.

And what is a "regular-sized" home anyway?

everyones home is different size and shape. different amount of doors and windows. Every can of paint can paint a different amount of space --- per square foot..
You need to go to a paint store and ask the questions there.. good luck.
