Wire size also depends on the length of the run. I would install a #6 wire no matter what. Make sure that you use a ground fault circuit breaker and the wire is a #6-3 with ground.

I listened once to an employee of Sutherlands on a 50 amp circuit, bought the wire they suggested. Unfortunately, I don't recall the size, but it was too small and the wire got too hot. Go with the larger size if you can.

it is better to have wiring to big than to small because of the risk of fire. a good rule of thumb,
14 gauge - 15 amp
12 gauge - 20 amp
10 gauge - 30 amp
8 gauge - 40 amp
6 gauge - 50 amp

Two choices for answering your question. The electrical codes may have changed is one. #2 is they have either had problems with the lighter wire or they are just covering their butts.
