First of all, throw that book away. It gives bad advice. You need to talk to your doctor about how much you should be lifting. Most will tell you nothing over 15 lbs. You CAN hurt yourself VERY badly lifting something heavier while pregnant. It wil probably not effect you baby but you will end up with very sore pulled or, heaven forbid, torn ligaments and muscles. Your abdominal muscles are already going to be under a large amount of strain, don't over work them. Better safe than sorry. Books are great (I own hundreds, at least 15 on pregnancy) but nothing, and I mean nothing, replaces the advice of your doctor.

You may have pulled a muscle and there is little you can do except rest it.
However your muscles, bones etc do relax during pregnancy (makes it easier for baby to come out at the end) so you are more at risk of injuring yourself than at any other time and should be careful when lifting things.
Baby at 6 weeks is tiny and still deep in your pelvis not in your abdomen so is highly unlikely to be effected.
The main thing is not how heavy the object is but how you lift it, and what technique you use to avoid straining yourself. When pregnanct with my third (about 12 weeks) I lifted my second (then a toddler) out a shopping trolley and hurt myself very badly, I was in agony for weeks and was unable to walk or stand up or even turn over in bed, my back was so bad. So I would say be careful and aware that your body is more 'loose' than before.

i'd agree with the peson who put the 1st answer on here n call NHS direct. but i didn't kno i was pregnant until i was 4 months (thought i was ill!!!) and was lugging heavy printer around and CPU's etc, it could just be plantation pains. i had those n it scared the hell out of me! don't worry too much, i'm pretty sure ur too early in ur pregnancy for heavy lifting 2 b a problem.
oh n its not a old wives tale as such. the old waives tale states that heavy liftin culd kill baby, but it culd actually cause ur placenter to rip away from where it is...and in the long run cause ur baby 2 die. so right in a way. but i hope that explains a bit more. plus when u get huge (like moi..7 months) u just dnt wana carry heavy things cuz ur back hurts! mind...one of my m8s thinks a kettle is 2 heavy 4 me 2 lift...not complaining tho!

Don't discount what "modern" medicine says about old wives tales, there is a lot of good sound advice taken from women who have gone through it before...you should not be lifting when you are pregnant...and even when you're not, women need to be careful & not lift heavy items as you can displace the uteres...if the pain doesn't go away...see your doctor.

I would call the dr. just to be safe. When I was 6 weeks I was babysitting and lifted the baby carrier with the newborn in it and I started to spot because it irritated my cervix. You are a lot more sensitive when you are pregnant....good luck and congrats and be careful from now on!!

Don't lift anything heavy. You really must be careful when you're pregnant. Whatever is in the basket is unimportant next to your baby, right? Get someone to help you with it or forget it altogether. It isn't worth it.

It's more likely your round ligaments stretching or something along those lines. I lifted my son regularly the whole time I was pregnant, and he was around 30 lbs at the time. If you're concerned, call the dr.

You maybe pulled a muscle, happens a lot when pregnant, feels like a constant pulling on the side.I moved when I was around 6 weeks pregnant and had to help my hubby move the washer and dryer,I'm sure your just fine, just lay down and rest.

To be safe, go get checked. I really doubt it because im 16 weeks and ive done EVERYTHING they say im not suppose to and then I get paranoid and I feel sharp pain in my lower adbomen. But the doctor says every pain is normal unless you see alot of blood down there. I get really scared too but Hopefully everything is okay. !! Goodluck!

You probably pulled a muscle and that hurts but should not harm the baby but you might want to get it checked out to on the safe side.
